The whole thing is chains, single crochet and half-doubles — nothing you have not already done. What makes it look the way it does is the arrangement: several tall stitches worked into one point so they spread into a fan, the fans offset row to row so they nest between one another. On a textured stitch like this, a variegated or ombré yarn competes with the relief — the eye follows the colour changes instead of the shells, and all the texture work disappears into the pattern of the dye. A plain mid-tone lets the stitch do the work.
