Make one spiral motif first and measure it. If it comes out at 9.5 inches, everything else will fall into place. If it does not, change your hook size before you make twenty more.

🎨 Choosing Your Colours

Substitutions are welcome, and the pattern is written so any five colours work. One tip that makes the difference between a blanket that dazzles and one that looks muddy:

• Keep your main colour dark. It becomes the framework between every motif and the border around the whole blanket — it is what makes each spiral stand out instead of blurring into its neighbour.
• Choose your four accents at clearly different lightness levels, not just different shades. A pale, a light-mid, a mid and a deep. The spiral is read by the eye following one band around; if two neighbouring bands are equally light, the coil disappears from two metres away.

The sample uses deep navy with cream, oatmeal, golden ochre and caramel. Deep charcoal with rust and mustard, or dark forest green with cream and gold, work on exactly the same principle.
