Some blankets are a wall of the same stitch for forty hours. This one is not.
Large spiral motifs coil outward from a small centre, each one a ribbon of colour turning through cream, oatmeal, ochre and caramel against a deep navy ground. Small square motifs sit on point between them, half-size ones fill the edges, and the whole thing is joined into one piece with a navy framework and border.
The result reads as an optical illusion from across the room and as fine handwork up close. And because it is built from separate motifs, you can make it in a bag on a train, one circle at a time.

๐ Finished Size
| Inches | Centimetres | |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 42 in | 107 cm |
| Length | 60.5 in | 154 cm |
๐ Gauge
| Motif | Size |
|---|---|
| Spiral motif | 9.5 in / 24 cm diameter |
| Square filler motif | 4 in / 10 cm |
| Half filler motif | 4.75 in / 12 cm corner to corner |
Make one spiral motif first and measure it. If it comes out at 9.5 inches, everything else will fall into place. If it does not, change your hook size before you make twenty more.

๐จ Choosing Your Colours
Substitutions are welcome, and the pattern is written so any five colours work. One tip that makes the difference between a blanket that dazzles and one that looks muddy:
- Keep your main colour dark. It becomes the framework between every motif and the border around the whole blanket โ it is what makes each spiral stand out instead of blurring into its neighbour.
- Choose your four accents at clearly different lightness levels, not just different shades. A pale, a light-mid, a mid and a deep. The spiral is read by the eye following one band around; if two neighbouring bands are equally light, the coil disappears from two metres away.
The sample uses deep navy with cream, oatmeal, golden ochre and caramel. Deep charcoal with rust and mustard, or dark forest green with cream and gold, work on exactly the same principle.
โ๏ธ How It Works
- ๐ Buy the pattern and download the PDF straight away
- ๐ Make one spiral motif and check it against the gauge
- ๐ Work your motifs โ spirals first, then the square and half fillers
- ๐งฉ Join the motifs following the assembly guidance
- ๐ผ๏ธ Add the border and weave in your ends
๐ Skill Level โ Intermediate
The individual motifs are not hard. What this pattern asks of you is consistency: twenty-odd spirals that all come out the same size, worked over several weeks, so they fit together at the end. If you have made granny squares and joined them, you have done the harder half of this already.
๐ก Why Motifs Are a Good Idea
A motif blanket travels. You are never carrying more than one circle, you always have a natural stopping point, and you can see progress in a pile of finished motifs long before there is a blanket. It is the format most likely to actually get finished.
