A crocheted cardigan in an allover star lace — fans that close into little stars — with long sleeves, one button at the chest, and a scalloped edge running all the way round the fronts, the neck, the hem and the cuffs. Above the button the fronts fall open into a soft V.
 
WHY IT LOOKS HARDER THAN IT IS
Five simple pieces — back, two fronts, two sleeves — all in the same two-row lace, with no shaping at all: no armhole, no neck shaping, no darts. One motif, repeated.
The scalloped edge — two rounds of band and one of scallops — is worked all the way round the hem, fronts and neck in one go, and every stitch of it is counted for your size — so it lies flat instead of rippling, which is where most crocheted cardigans go wrong.
There is no buttonhole: the button closes through a space already in the lace.

SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate: chain, single and double crochet, five double crochet in one stitch, a five-stitch cluster, and seaming. If you have made a crocheted garment before, this one will feel familiar.
 
A NOTE ON BLOCKING
Block the pieces before seaming. Unblocked cotton lace stays closed and the garment comes out smaller than the chart — the fans only open once the fabric has been wetted and pinned out. The pattern explains how.
