Hooded Lace Cape — Crochet Pattern PDF
A floor-length open-front cape with an oversized hood, a textured body, diamond lace panels down the front, a band of large sunburst floral motifs around the lower edge, a scalloped hem and long neck ties with tassels. Written in US crochet terminology.
What kind of project this is
This is a large project, and deliberately so. It takes between 2,500 and 3,600 yards of DK yarn depending on size — roughly ten to fourteen skeins — and it is the kind of piece you work on through a season rather than over a weekend. What you get at the end is a garment that will outlast anything you could buy.
Sizes
Size 1, S/M — fits bust 32-38" (81-97 cm), finished length approximately 49-51" (124-130 cm) Size 2, L/XL — fits bust 40-46" (102-117 cm), finished length approximately 51-53" (130-135 cm) Size 3, 2XL/3XL — fits bust 48-54" (122-137 cm), finished length approximately 53-55" (135-140 cm)
Yarn
DK / weight 3 yarn with good stitch definition. Cotton-acrylic, merino-acrylic, premium acrylic, cotton-bamboo, or a soft wool blend with minimal halo — a yarn with a halo will blur the lace.
S/M: 2,500-2,850 yd (2,285-2,605 m) · L/XL: 2,850-3,200 yd (2,605-2,925 m) · 2XL/3XL: 3,200-3,600 yd (2,925-3,290 m)
The design is written for black, but any colour works. Deep jewel tones and rich neutrals hold the lace pattern best; very pale yarns lose the contrast that makes the openwork read.
What the pattern includes
Detailed written instructions · US crochet terminology · three grouped sizes · oversized hood construction · sunburst floral motifs · rectangular floral lace panels · diamond front lattice · scalloped edging · crochet neck ties and tassels · sizing and adjustment guidance · gauge information · blocking and finishing instructions.
Materials
4.0 mm and 3.5 mm hooks, plus an optional 3.25 mm for the lace borders · yarn needle · scissors · stitch markers and locking stitch markers · measuring tape · blocking mats and rustproof pins · optional decorative rings or buttons and a small sewing needle if you add a closure.
Skill level
Intermediate to advanced. You should be comfortable with basic stitches, lace construction, increases, working individual motifs, joining panels, shaping and garment finishing.
Blocking matters on this one
The lace panels and the sunburst motifs only open to their full size once the pieces have been wetted and pinned out. Unblocked, the cape will come out smaller and the motifs will stay closed. The pattern explains how.
