The scarf that teaches you to crochet.
Two stitches. A chain to start, and half double crochet for everything else. No shaping, no increases, no decreases, no assembly โ a straight rectangle, worked back and forth, with a simple grid of small openings that gives it texture without giving you anything extra to learn.
And it is long enough and wide enough to actually wear, which is not true of every beginner project.

- โ Tips for keeping your tension even

๐ The Part That Actually Matters for a First Project
This pattern explains turning chains and how to keep your tension even.
That sounds like a small thing. It is the difference between a scarf and a wonky triangle.
Nearly every first crochet project goes wrong the same way: the edges creep in or flare out, row by row, because of what happens at the start and end of each row. It is not a skill problem, it is a thing nobody explained. This pattern explains it before you start, rather than leaving you to work it out on row forty.
If you have tried crochet before and given up because it "went crooked", this is the reason, and this is the fix.
๐ Finished Size
Approximately 11 inches wide by 60 inches long (28 ร 152 cm).
Instructions are included to adjust both the width and the length, so you can make it narrower, wider, shorter or longer. The scarf is a rectangle โ changing its size means changing how many stitches you chain and how many rows you work, and the pattern gives you the rule.
๐๏ธ You'll Need
- 400โ500 yards of medium worsted weight (Category 4) yarn
- A 5.0 mm crochet hook (US H/8)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
๐ง Stitches Used
Chain (ch) ยท half double crochet (hdc) ยท skip (sk)
That is the complete list. The skipped stitches are what create the little openings running through the fabric โ you are not learning a new stitch to get the texture, you are simply not working into every stitch.
โ๏ธ How It Works
- ๐ Buy the pattern and download the PDF straight away
- ๐ Read the section on turning chains before you start โ it takes two minutes
- ๐งถ Chain your starting row and work back and forth
- ๐ Keep going until it is as long as you want
- โ๏ธ Fasten off, weave in your ends, add fringe if you like it
๐ Skill Level โ Absolute Beginner
If you can hold a hook and make a chain, you can make this. There is nothing here that you have to learn first.
One honest note: a scarf this size is a real project, not a five-minute one. It is easy the whole way through, but it is long enough to be an evening or several. That is actually what you want from a first project โ enough repetition to get comfortable, and something wearable at the end of it.
๐ฐ Making These to Sell
You may sell the scarves you make from this pattern in small quantities โ at markets, at fairs, or to people who ask. Please do not resell, share or redistribute the pattern file itself.
๐ Perfect For
