š§£ Ribbed Hooded Cowl ā Crochet Pattern
Three ways to wear Ā· Deep FPdc/BPdc ribbing Ā· 12-page illustrated guide Ā· US crochet terms Ā· Advanced beginner
One piece, three garments ā and it works because of one thing: the ribbing grips.
Wear it down and it is a tall turtleneck collar. Pull the hood up and it is a hooded cowl. Pull the neck up over your face and it becomes a full balaclava, and it stays there ā which is the whole difficulty with a garment like this. Deep front-post and back-post ribbing is what gives the neck enough hold to be pulled up and not slide back down two minutes later.
And there is a second piece of design in here that almost no pattern bothers with. You work the neck on a 5 mm hook and the hood on a 6 mm. Same yarn, same stitch ā a different hook. The neck comes out tight and structured so it holds its position; the hood comes out looser and softer so it drapes over your head instead of sitting on it like a helmet. That single change is the difference between a hood that looks made and one that looks bought. āØ

š What You'll Learn
š Working seamlessly in the round ć°ļø Front post and back post double crochet, for deep ribbing šŖ¢ Back loop only, for texture š Increasing evenly to shape a hood āļø Moving between working in rounds and back and forth in rows āļø Clean seaming for a professional finish
š Finished Measurements (one size, adult)
| Neck circumference | 20ā22ā³, stretchy ribbed fit |
| Neck height | 8ā³ |
| Hood depth | 10ā12ā³ |
Check your tension before you go far: the neck should measure about 8ā³ high after 20 rounds. On a garment that has to go over your head and stay around your neck, this matters ā take the two minutes.
š§¶ Materials

- 5 mm (H-8) hook for the neck ā tighter, so it holds
- 6 mm (J-10) hook for the hood ā looser, so it drapes
- Yarn needle, sharp scissors, stitch markers, measuring tape
