🧶 Striped Basketweave Baby Blanket — Crochet Pattern

Three colours · Textured stripes · Easy · Only five stitches · 5.5/6 mm hook · Instant PDF download

Not everyone wants a pastel baby blanket.

Mint, peach, lemon, powder pink — that is almost the entire crochet baby blanket aisle, and plenty of parents quietly do not want any of it. Charcoal, slate blue and cream is a baby blanket that looks like something you would have in the house anyway — it sits in a modern nursery without shouting, it photographs well, and it does not stop working the moment the baby is two. 🍼

And the texture does something the colours alone could not. The wide grey and blue bands are worked in a raised basketweave — small blocks standing proud of one another in a chequer — while the narrow cream bands are worked flat and smooth. So the surface changes twice: once in colour, once in relief. Run your hand across it and you feel the stripes before you see them.

All of it from five stitches. Chain, single crochet, half double crochet, slip stitch, and the half double crochet slip stitch that makes the flat cream bands. Nothing else. The blanket looks considered because of how those five are arranged, not because any of them is difficult.

📖 What You'll Receive

✔️ 1 PDF crochet pattern ✔️ Written instructions ✔️ Full stitch abbreviations list ✔️ Printing guidance for A4 and A5

🪡 The Five Stitches

  • CH — chain
  • SC — single crochet
  • HDC — half double crochet
  • SL ST — slip stitch
  • HDC SL ST — half double crochet slip stitch, used for the flat cream bands

📊 Skill Level: Easy

No shaping, no assembly, nothing to fit. You work one band, then the next, in a repeating sequence, and finish with a border. The only thing to learn is working around the post of a stitch instead of into the top of it — and once you have that, you have the basketweave, and you have it for everything else you make.

🧶 Yarn

Cotton yarn, in three colours of your choice.

Choose three shades that differ clearly in lightness, not just in hue. That is what makes this blanket read from across a room: a light, a mid-tone and a dark. Three pastels of the same depth will blur into one another and the stripes will disappear — which is exactly what happens to most crochet baby blankets and why so many look softer in person than in the photograph.

🛍️ You'll Also Need

  • 5.5 mm / 6 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

🖨️ Printing

A4: set the scale to 100% and printer quality to Best. A5: adjust your printer settings, or print on 8.5 × 11 and trim to A5.

💛 Perfect For

A new baby · A modern or neutral nursery · A gift for parents who do not want pastels · A first blanket project · Learning post stitches on something worth finishing

📌 Please Note

Follow current safe-sleep guidance when using any blanket with an infant. A handmade blanket like this is for prams, playmats, laps and photographs rather than an unattended cot.

Questions makers ask

Do I need to print anything?
Not unless you want to. The pattern is a clean PDF you can follow straight from your phone, tablet, or laptop. If you'd rather work from paper, it prints on regular A4 or US Letter with no special setup — and the layout is designed so you're not wasting ink on backgrounds.
I'm a complete beginner — can I do this?
Absolutely. Our patterns are designed to be beginner-friendly, with clear, illustrated step-by-step instructions that guide you through the whole process. Thousands of first-time makers have crocheted our patterns with no prior experience.
How do I get my pattern after I buy?
Instantly. The moment your payment is confirmed, your files are ready to download — and we'll also email you a download link so you always have access. No waiting, no shipping.
Can I sell what I make?
Yes! You're welcome to sell finished items you make from our patterns. We just ask that you don't share, resell, or redistribute the pattern files themselves.
What yarn and hook do I need?
Every pattern lists the exact yarn weight, hook size, and yardage up front, along with the gauge swatch so your finished piece comes out the right size. You can substitute any yarn of the same weight — just check your gauge first.
What if I get stuck?
We're here to help. If anything's unclear or you run into trouble, just reach out by email and we'll get you back on track — usually within 24 hours.
