🦋 Butterfly Meadow Baby Blanket — Crochet Pattern
38 × 42 in / 96.5 × 106.5 cm after blocking · 5 dimensional butterflies · 14 crocheted flowers and appliqués · Botanical lace edging · US crochet terms · Intermediate
Anyone can crochet a butterfly. The difficult part of a blanket like this is deciding where to put it.
Fourteen separate appliqués, and every one of them in the wrong place, is a mess. A meadow that has been scattered rather than arranged looks exactly like what it is — and by the time you can see that, everything is already sewn down. It is the reason most appliqué blankets look homemade, and it has nothing to do with how well the flowers were crocheted.
So the placement is designed for you. The pattern includes a butterfly placement map, a flower placement map, stem and flower positioning for the meadow, and an assembly sequence that tells you what to attach in what order. You are not deciding. You are following a layout that was worked out first. ✨
And there is a second reason the butterflies look the way they do. You work the blanket on a 4.0 mm hook and the appliqués on a 3.25 mm — a size smaller. The tighter fabric makes pieces that hold their own shape and stand up off the surface instead of lying flat against it. That single change is the difference between an appliqué and a decoration that has wilted.

📊 Skill Level: Intermediate
Recommended for crocheters comfortable with basic stitches, working in rows and rounds, magic rings, appliqués, surface crochet, and sewing crochet components securely in place.
Nothing in it is an advanced technique. What makes it intermediate is the number of separate elements and the finishing — fourteen appliqués, a four-band border, surface-crocheted stems and a lace edging, all of which have to be worked cleanly and attached well.
💛 Perfect For
Baby showers · Newborn keepsakes · Nursery décor · Stroller or pram use · Supervised baby photography · Handmade family gifts · Heirloom crochet projects
⚠️ Please Read
This blanket has dimensional appliqués sewn to its surface. Follow current safe-sleep recommendations when making items for infants — a blanket like this belongs on a nursery wall, over a pram in the daytime or in a photograph, not in a cot with a sleeping baby. Sew every appliqué down securely all the way round.
